Apple is expected to unveil a few new tablets later this year, but an upgraded iPad Airmay not make the cut. A new report out of Taiwan claims the iPad Air 3 may take a backseat until at least next year.
According to The Economic Daily News, Apple still plans to announce a new iPad minialong with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in time for the holiday shopping season. Just don’t expect the iPad Air 3 to launch any time soon.
The report notes that Apple has two good reasons for this decision. First, it takes the pressure off Foxconn, which assembles most of the company’s iPads. Second, it puts a bigger emphasis on the upcoming iPad Pro, which many hope will help boost Cupertino’s struggling tablet sales.
Foxconn apparently has a monopoly on iPad Pro production, with displays for the 12.9-inch slate coming from Samsung and Sharp. As for the smaller iPad mini 4, which is apparently an “end-of-life” product, it’s unclear if Foxconn will share production with another company for the smaller tablet.
It doesn’t come as a huge surprise that Apple is slowing down its iPad product cycle. The company’s last few tablets haven’t been particularly revolutionary. So, instead of refreshing every tablet every year, it may make more sense to stagger the process a bit.
